“Be still, and know that I am God.” This is the first line of Psalm 46:10 (NIV). They are eight simple words but they carry so much power. I often rely on this verse when I am struggling.
I have seasons in my faith journey. Sometimes I feel strong, refreshed and full of hope. These times remind me of Spring when new life is emerging and the future looks colorful. There are the days I feel calm and confident. No particular anxieties; just living in a regular rhythm. These days remind me of Summer and the laid back feelings of rest.
Then without warning, Autumn is upon me. Unexpected changes in my life appear. New anxieties take hold of my mind and my heart. Some are subtle yet others are bold like the changing colors of the world around me. I keep praying and trying to keep my faith strong but I am weak. It feels as though God is slipping away. My most difficult season is when I feel abandoned. My prayers are met with silence. Fears, worries and problems seem to be getting thicker in volume like the ice and snow of Winter. The starkness of my heart mirrors the coldness of the weather.
This is when I need Psalm 46:10 the most. “Be still, and KNOW that I am God.” (emphasis mine). It doesn’t say ‘hope’ that I am God, or Be still and ‘wish’ that I am God or even Be still and ‘maybe’ I’ll be God. It says KNOW! Thinking of it with words like accept, recognize or understand gives the same emphasis. He is telling me that He is God. He is always with me. I am never alone no matter what season I am experiencing.
The first two words of this Psalm are imperative too; “Be still…”. This is an action that I struggle with. But to be still in body, mind, heart and spirit can be so refreshing. To still my mind allows the noise and confusion to settle so I can focus on Him and hear His voice. I like to close my eyes and visualize myself by a quiet lake. Hearing the softness of the water lapping at the shore causes my breathing to follow the same rhythm. Feeling the sunlight on my face and a gentle breeze brush around my arms helps me imagine God is right next to me.
Regardless of what faith season you may be in, take some time this week to practice and believe, “Be still, and know that I am God.”
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” Psalm 37:7 (NIV)
“Have faith in God, Jesus answered.” Mark 11:22 (NIV)
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)
