God’s Kaleidoscope

The other day I was rummaging around in my cedar chest and found some long forgotten treasures. I found my original game of “Jacks” in the same box I used when I was a little girl. The 10 Jacks and the little red ball, although aged considerably, still worked.

Finding this reminder of simpler days got me thinking about childhood toys that were my favorites. I loved Pick-Up-Sticks, Troll Dolls, Slinky and the View Master. But one toy that always fascinated me was the Kaleidoscope. The brilliant colors and the amazing shapes all working together to form such incredible images. With just a slight turn of the wheel on the end, a new image would appear. And when turning it fast, it looked as though the designs were dancing.

In the movie, The Shack, there is a scene with several lights shining brightly out in a meadow. The character, Sarayu who represents the Holy Spirit, explains that God sees us as hues of light and color. I found this interesting. I tried to think what that would look like and I thought about the kaleidoscope.

Can you imagine what beautiful colors and designs we create as we interact with each other? Those people we are in touch with routinely may look like a slow moving image, bright yet steady. The interactions we have with people only occasionally or even with strangers might look like the images that appear when the kaleidoscope wheel is turning fast. And what about the mood of the interaction? Happiness, peace and laughter might look bright and sparkly. Anger, sadness and negativity may look like dark hues. Could we all be an intragal part of a beautiful kaleidoscope for God? What a view He must have.

The bible tells us we are to walk in His light. I pause and ask myself, “Where am I in His kaleidoscope?” I know I want to be part of an image that makes Him smile.

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth.”  Ephesians 5:8-9  NIV

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another…” 1 John 1:7  NIV

“Whoever loves his brother lives in the light…”  1 John 2:10  NIV

  1. What an interesting thought. Does our light stay the same or does it change with our mood?
