Have you ever noticed how certain sounds, when repeated over and over are ignored? They can become like white noise. They fill the air but lose their effect on us. Our human nature learns how to “tune them out.” Examples of these for me include commercials on TV, traffic noise during a commute and even a person who talks incessantly (I had an Aunt like this, God rest her soul).
But one common sound that never gets ignored is the pealing high pitch of an emergency siren. I’m sure we all pay attention when we hear this familiar sound while we are driving. We know we need to safely pull over to allow the emergency vehicle passage. But what about when we’re not on the road? Do you notice sirens when you are in your backyard or out for a walk?
I know I became keenly aware of ambulance sirens due to working so long in the medical field. I would see a patient in the Emergency Room. Whether they were an accident victim or having a cardiac episode, my heart ached for them and I would say a quick prayer for their recovery.
This practice became a habit for me. For years now, whenever I hear a siren I say a prayer. If it is an ambulance or fire engine I pray, “Lord, please bless the emergency workers and those they are going to help.” If I hear a police car siren I pray, “Lord, keep those officers safe and those they are pursuing.”
I believe so strongly in the power of prayer that I hope my quick prayers for these strangers are helpful. It is such an easy thing to do. Try it the next time you hear a siren wherever you might be.
“The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” James 5:16
For years people have asked me to pray for them and their intentions. I feel honored and humbled with these requests. If you have a concern weighing heavy on your heart, please connect with me on my Prayer Request page (found in the Main Menu). I would be honored to add you to my prayers. I promise your words will be kept confidential.
If my story resonates with you I would love to hear your comments below.

I am cognizant of sirens. When my Rosie and Stanley were young, I taught them to “sing” whenever they heard sirens. It was definitely a way to notice the sirens. I always would say a prayer. Although, my pray was, God, someone is having a bad day. I believe that God understood my unspoken words that he help them thru their bad day, no matter what it brought.
Anyway, your article reminded me of when my dogs used to “sing” to the sounds of the sirens.
