Being Led Through The Fog

Growing up and living most of my life in the Pacific Northwest, I drove in all sorts of weather. Bright sunny skies, pouring rain, sand and dust storms, heavy snowfall, black ice and even ice you could see. Through the years I gained confidence in my ability to navigate the highways and byways. However, the one condition I hated most was driving in the fog.

The most terrifying aspect is not being able to see what is ahead of me. What I considered to be mild fog allowed me to see at least several yards ahead of me. It still makes me nervous but not unbearable. However, thick fog is another story. When the visibility is only a matter of feet out in front of the hood of the car that terrifies me. Sometimes the fog is so dense, the beam of the headlights will bounce off the mysterious white mist and reflect right back into my eyes. It really feels like “the blind leading the blind.” Not being able to see the road in front of me, not knowing what is ahead, not being able to see obstacles before I was on top of them makes me very uncomfortable. I don’t feel safe at all.

Recently, I was having that same uneasy feeling. I wasn’t driving but instead was sitting at home doing my morning devotions. I was worried and praying about some important personal issues. I said to God, “If only I knew what to expect. If only I could see further ahead, I would know what to do. I could be prepared.”

That’s when I made the connection. The fear I felt of not knowing reminded me of the fear of driving in the fog. That feeling of helplessness, of not being in control makes me nervous. Then I thought about God’s love, His protection, His guidance. He doesn’t want me to see too far ahead. He wants me to depend on Him. He wants me to trust Him. He only lets me see a limited view. When I focus on the anticipation of what’s ahead of me, I lose my focus on Him. I forget that He is always with me and that He never leaves me.

Unlike the dense white weather phenomenon, being surrounded by my idea of God’s fog makes me feel protected and safe. I trust Him to navigate me on the right road and keep me from harmful obstacles. After all, He is the one I want with me in any weather!

“We live by faith, not by sight.”  2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”  Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)

For years people have asked me to pray for them and their intentions. I feel honored and humbled with these requests. If you have a concern weighing heavy on your heart, please connect with me on my Prayer Request page (found in the Main Menu). I would be honored to add you to my prayers. I promise your words will be kept confidential.
